Chainsaws are a tool for cutting, pruning and more, but chainsaw safety information isn't widely known. We've created a list of our top safety tips to help to protect you from harm. Don't forget you can always pop into any of our branches and our staff will be happy to help.
Wear PPE
PPE is essential when operating a chain saw. The ideal PPE would include steel-toe boots, a hard hat, protective gloves and safety goggles/glasses.
Keep the Chainsaw Low
When operating try to avoid using the chain saw above waist height to reduce the risk of it falling. However, you should never let the chainsaw touch the ground as this can cause the blade to go blunt.
Have a firm grip
When using the chainsaw, make sure to have a firm two-handed grip and have your feet firmly positioned so there isn't a chance of slipping.
Only operate a chainsaw in a well-ventilated area
The dust produced from cutting wood can be dangerous to breathe in so always operate chainsaws in a safe and well-ventilated area. Also, avoid being near buildings, other people or animals, vehicles or power lines.
Ensure your chainsaw is properly maintained
Regularly maintaining or replacing the chain saw blade when it goes blunt can help to protect you from kickback.
Only purchase a chainsaw with the correct safety features
Make sure your chainsaw has safety features such as a kick-back guard, chain break, throttle lock, chain catcher and right hand guard. If your current machine doesn't have these safety features then it might be time to consider purchasing a new one. We would highly recommend the STIHL MS 201 TC-M for the best of the range safety features.
For a slightly lower-end device with similar features you can also consider another chainsaw for sale; the Husqvarna 435 II 15" Petrol Chainsaw
Read the Safety Instructions
Always read the safety instructions that come with the chainsaw - if you're unsure about something please ask a member of our staff by phone or come in-store.
